The midfielder will link up with Diego Simeone's men
for the remainder of 2014-15 as the reigning Liga champions bolster
their squad for their title defence
The 33-year-old has started just five games in La Liga this season for the Yellow Submarine, although an ankle sprain did keep him sidelined for four games ahead of the winter break.
The reigning champions, however, see Cani as an asset in their attempts to retain the title which they so impressively and surprisingly won in 2013-14.
Cani came through the youth system at Real Zaragoza before joining Villarreal in 2006. He was playing in his ninth season for the Castellon club before packing his bags for the remainder of 2014-15 to attempt to win silverware under Diego Simeone at the Vicente Calderon.
"He is a proven player in our league with tremendous quality, who will increase competition within the squad," Atletico sporting director Jose Luis Caminero told reporters.
"We are very happy with his arrival because he will contribute a lot to the team in this decisive period of the season."
