Southampton - Arsenal Preview: Wenger wary of too much rotation

Southampton - Arsenal Preview: Wenger wary of too much rotation\
The Gunners will play their third Premier League game in seven days when they travel to St Mary's Stadium on Thursday but the Frenchman is keen to maintain momentum

Arsene Wenger is wary of making too many changes when Arsenal play their third Premier League game in seven days at Southampton on Thursday.

The Guneners have enjoyed a productive festive period so far, recording 2-1 victories at home to QPR on Boxing Day and at West Ham two days later, but Wenger concedes that maintaining their momentum while still giving players sufficient rest will be difficult.

"We have Southampton, which is another game that will demand a high intensity and commitment, so I will have to look at how we recovered because we gave a lot in the last two games in 48 hours," he told the media. "It's down now to the quality of the recovery.

"Rotation is a sensitive subject because you can destabilise your team with too much rotation so you have to find the right numbers for rotating the team. Overall, you want to keep the balance of your team and as well refresh sometimes in the positions where players are a bit tired."

Tomas Rosicky made his first Premier League start of the season against QPR before being rested for the trip to Upton Park and Wenger confirmed that the Czech midfielder would return to the fray on Thursday.

The Arsenal manager has a fitness concern over Danny Welbeck, whom he felt would be "short" for the game after sustaining a thigh problem at West Ham.

Olivier Giroud is still suspended following his red card against QPR so Alexis Sanchez could be in line to fill in at centre forward, while the likes of Aaron Ramsey (hamstring), Mesut Ozil (knee), Mikel Arteta (calf) and Jack Wilshere (ankle) remain out.

Having confounded many pre-season predictions, Southampton head into the match fourth in the table - above Arsenal on goal difference.

Ronald Koeman led his side to a spirited 1-1 draw with league leaders Chelsea on Sunday, while the Saints frustrated Arsenal for much of the pair's meeting just four weeks previously at the Emirates Stadium, won late on by Alexis Sanchez.

Despite the grit in those performances to go with Southampton's abundance of creativity, Koeman remains cautious.

"Maybe we can come and surprise people," he told reporters. "Arsenal are always one of the top clubs in the Premier League because they have very good players like Sanchez, who can win games.

"We don't have those sorts of players, we're more about teamwork.

"The top four is not an obsession because I don't like to watch every weekend the table because it means nothing [until the end]."

Influential midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin – a reported January target for Arsenal, among others – misses out through suspension, while Nathaniel Clyne (ankle) is injured and Emmanuel Mayuka has departed for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Tottenham - Chelsea Preview: Mourinho plays down concerns over away form

Tottenham - Chelsea Preview: Mourinho plays down concerns over away form
All of the Blues' dropped points so far in this Premier League season have come on the road but, ahead of a trip to White Hart Lane on New Year's Day, the manager is confident

Jose Mourinho does not feel that Chelsea's away form is a cause for concern ahead of Thursday's trip to face Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

The Blues have dropped points on just five occasions so far this season in the Premier League and sit three points clear of second-placed Manchester City ahead of their trip to north London but their four draws and solitary defeat have all come on the road, with Sunday's 1-1 draw with Southampton representing the most recent setback.

When it was put to him that Chelsea's away form could see them caught by City during 2015, Mourinho argued that his team were simply going through a tricky run of fixtures.

"We had very difficult fixtures away from home. We lost one game [against Newcastle] that we didn't deserve to lose," the Portuguese told the press.

"We are doing well. Every match is difficult. When we go to Tottenham it's difficult, when we go to Swansea it's difficult, when we go to QPR it's difficult. I don't think there are easy matches.

"At the end of the season there are 19 matches at home and 19 matches away. Of course it's more difficult now - we have a difficult period, other teams have an easier one 0 but if it's a draw [that decides the fixture list] it's a draw, you cannot complain with a draw."

Chelsea boast an impressive home record against Spurs in the Premier League but drew at White Hart Lane last season and required John Terry's second-half goal to snatch a point.

Like Mourinho, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has a full squad from which to choose, with Nabil Bentaleb set to return from illness for a side who have found form of late.

Unbeaten in the league since December's 3-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Tottenham have taken 11 points from their last five games and held in-form Manchester United to a goalless draw on Sunday.

Pochettino wants Spurs to take the belief from their recent form into Thursday's London derby and kick off 2015 with what would be an impressive victory.

"We need to believe like [we did against United] and try to play our game, we need to keep this feeling and try show the same performance," he told the club's official website.

"I think we are in the process that we start to believe more. This is important and [Sunday] was a good example of that belief.

"Every game is different and we need to believe. It's a tough game against first in the table but why not?"

Liverpool - Leicester City Preview: Rodgers wants to continue progress into 2015

Liverpool - Leicester City Preview: Rodgers wants to continue progress into 2015
The Reds manager feels that his side are in a position to continue on an upward curve as they prepare to take on Nigel Pearson's struggling Foxes at Anfield on New Year's Day

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has made continued progress his priority for 2015, beginning with Thursday's clash against Leicester City.

After pushing Manchester City all the way in last season's title race, the Reds have struggled to live up to those standards in the first half of the current campaign, but Rodgers remains delighted with his team's progress over the past 12 months and has called for more of the same next year.

"As a year, it's been another one of progress," he told reporters. "The beginning of this season wasn't quite what we wanted it to be but, over the course of 2014, we've definitely made significant strides forward.

"We've been consistent in that we want to be a team based on high performance and, in the year, only two teams picked up more points than us [Chelsea and Manchester City] so, despite the start to this season, we've made good progress overall. I've been pleased but we've still got a lot of work to do."

Liverpool are now unbeaten in three Premier League matches and head into the New Year's Day visit of Leicester to Anfield on the back of a morale-boosting 4-1 win over Swansea City on Monday.

Rodgers knows that the race for the top four will now step up a gear and hopes that recent results can provide a good platform moving forward.

"We have an exciting period now going into the second half of the season," he continued. "There are a lot of good teams trying to get into the top four. We're building confidence and momentum and really looking forward to the rest of the campaign."

Leicester are currently rooted to the bottom of the league table, despite ending a 13-match winless run at Hull City last time out, but Rodgers is taking nothing for granted.

"Every game is different and Leicester will want to make it challenging for us," he added, "but we will be ready and we want to continue this little spell we're on and finish this tough Christmas schedule with maximum points."

Leicester boss Nigel Pearson has hinted that he could hand a debut to former Manchester United youngster Tom Lawrence after he returned from a loan at Rotherham United, while Andy King (thigh), Kasper Schmeichel (foot) and Paul Konchesky (suspended) are all out.

Rodgers remains without Daniel Sturridge (thigh) and Glen Johnson (groin) but could welcome back Dejan Lovren (groin) after the defender returned to training. Martin Skrtel is suspended after accumulating five yellow cards.

Liverpool won the reverse fixture 3-1 at the King Power Stadium at the beginning of December in a match that saw Pearson earn himself a fine and a touchline ban after becoming involved in a row with a home supporter.

Chelsea starlet Bamford extends Middlesbrough loan spell

Chelsea starlet Bamford extends Middlesbrough loan spell
The 21-year-old has impressed since moving to the Riverside in the summer, scoring eight goals in 19 appearances to help fire Boro into fourth in the Championship

Middlesbrough have confirmed they have extended their loan agreement with Chelsea for striker Patrick Bamford until the end of the season.

Bamford has impressed since joining Boro on loan in the summer, scoring eight goals in 19 appearances to help Aitor Karanka's men climb into fourth in the Championship.

His initial deal was due to expire in January but Middlesbrough have moved swiftly to secure the highly-rated 21-year-old for the rest of the campaign as they chase promotion to the Premier League.

"He loves to be here, we love him here, the squad wants him here and the crowd loves him," Karanka told the club's official website when asked about Bamford.

“He's a very good player. I wanted him in the first month of when I arrived here. He’s playing as a striker, he’s supported us a lot, and he’s played for the team and thinks about his team and his team-mates. He is an important player.

"He's a young lad, he has to improve and he has to learn, but he understands the team is the main thing and he wants to be a part of it."

Bamford has already shone during loan spells with MK Dons and Derby County since signing for Chelsea from Nottingham Forest in January 2012.

QPR - Swansea City Preview: Redknapp aims to maintain home form

QPR - Swansea City Preview: Redknapp aims to maintain home form
The Rs have only lost twice in 10 games at Loftus Road this season, in comparison to a dire record on the road, while the Swans must recover from a hammering by Liverpool

QPR manager Harry Redknapp wants to see his side maintain their strong home form when they host Swansea City on New Year's Day.

The Rs have lost just two of their 10 fixtures at Loftus Road this season, compared to defeats in all nine of their away matches.

With his side sitting two points clear of the Premier League relegation zone, Redknapp is keen to see that home form remain reliable during the second half of the campaign.

He told the press: "It's been fantastic. We've been difficult to beat at home. Even the [Crystal] Palace game [which finished 0-0 on Sunday], it wasn't a classic but you have to keep clawing out results.

"It changes in the second half of the season. The first half we played all the teams in the bottom half but [now] we go away to all the teams in the bottom half."

First up for QPR in 2015 is Swansea and Redknapp believes that Garry Monk is the latest promising young manager to be rolled off the production line at the Liberty Stadium, following the likes of Roberto Martinez, Brendan Rodgers and Michael Laudrup.

"They're a good side," he added. "Garry's done a great job, he's carried on from where they were.

"They've had a few excellent young managers in the last few years and they've all gone on to do great things and he's another in that line. He's carried on the way they've played in the last five or six years."

Monk will almost certainly include Ki Sung-Yueng and Wilfried Bony in his starting XI, with the duo set to depart for the Asian Cup and Africa Cup of Nations, respectively, after Thursday's match and the manager wants to see a much-improved display following Monday's 4-1 hammering at Liverpool.

"The players have to put in a performance to make us all feel proud again," the 35-year-old stated at his pre-match press conference. "It will be a different game there. [QPR] are very strong at home and it's a tight pitch.

"We are working on identifying strengths along with looking at where we can improve on."

Jonjo Shelvey will be absent for the visitors as he serves the first match of a four-game suspension for lashing out at Emre Can at Anfield, while Jefferson Montero (hamstring) remains sidelined.

QPR have no fresh injury concerns from their last game but Sandro (knee) remains a couple of weeks from a return.

Newcastle - Burnley Preview: Carver takes charge in Pardew's absence

Newcastle - Burnley Preview: Carver takes charge in Pardew's absence
he Magpies are in a "hectic" situation as Crystal Palace court their manager, while Sean Dyche's Clarets only start 2015 in the relegation zone due to goal difference

Newcastle caretaker manager John Carver hopes to overcome the club's "chaos" in the absence of Alan Pardew when they host Burnley.

Pardew will not be in the dugout for the New Year's Day clash at St James's Park, having entered talks with Premier League rivals Crystal Palace about a return to Selhurst Park.

With the 53-year-old out of the picture, Newcastle will be led by Carver and Steve Stone as they look to build on Sunday's 3-2 victory over Everton.

Carver, who has labelled the Newcastle post as his "dream job", is not treating the visit of Burnley as an audition but remains determined to keep up the team's recent form.

"It's quite a unique situation [and] it's been pretty hectic," said the 49-year-old to reporters. "As soon as I knew [Pardew] was in talks with [Palace] I had to get my head around preparing the team for Burnley.

"That's all I've done. It's been carnage, actually. With two games in a short period it's quite difficult; I've had to delegate to ensure we are ready.

"Burnley deserved their draw at Manchester City. They don't look like a side at the bottom and the manager's done a fantastic job."

Sean Dyche's men head to Tyneside brimming with confidence after coming from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Premier League champions Manchester City on Sunday. That moved the Clarets level with 17th-placed Hull City, although they remain in the bottom three on goal difference.

A second win on their travels this season could see Burnley leap out of trouble, though, and Dyche is looking to maintain the good vibes at the club into 2015.

"There is a learning curve and I have been very pleased with the players and how they have adapted," he said.

"It is a 'so-far' story and I remind the players of that. It's important that we keep the humility and belief in what we do on occasions like City because there's another game coming along quickly and we need more points and more wins on the board."

The visitors will welcome back Sam Vokes to their matchday squad after he was rested for the City game. The striker is still building his fitness after a knee injury and Dyche insists that he will not rush the Wales international back.

Michael Duff (calf) and Matt Taylor (Achilles) have also given Dyche a boost after they both resumed training but neither will be ready for the Newcastle game.

The Magpies will be without striker Papiss Cisse as he serves the first of a three-game ban for elbowing Everton's Seamus Coleman and first-choice goalkeepers Tim Krul (ankle) and Rob Elliot (thigh) remain on the sidelines. That will see Jak Alnwick continue in goal but Sammy Ameobi is a doubt after picking up a knock last time out.

Swansea City open to bids for Liverpool and Tottenham target Bony

Swansea City open to bids for Liverpool and Tottenham target Bony
With Premier League big-hitters chasing the prolific Ivorian striker, Swans chairman Huw Jenkins insists that no contact has been made but is unwilling to rule out a sale

Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins says that there has been no approach for Wilfried Bony but refuses to rule out selling the striker.

Bony has become a fans' favourite at the Liberty Stadium since arriving for a club-record £12 million fee from Vitesse in July 2013.

The Ivory Coast international scored 17 Premier League goals in his debut season before eight in 19 so far this term and Goal understands that both Liverpool and Tottenham are preparing to test the Welsh club's resolve with January bids, while Manchester City have also been linked.

Jenkins insists that he has received no contact regarding Bony - who, in November, signed a new contract that runs until 2018 - but admits that he would consider an offer for any player if the price is right.

"As things stand we have not had any contact from anyone with respect to Wilfried," Jenkins told the press. "It's just speculation linked to a player who is the top scorer in 2014 in the Premier League - which is perfectly natural.

"First and foremost, I will consider everything that arises at the time but, as of yet, we haven't got anything to consider.

"Players move around - that's a fact of life. The one thing I've learned over time is never say never in football but officially, at the moment, we haven't had any contact from Manchester City or anyone else about Wilfried."

Newcastle would be my 'dream job', admits Carver

Newcastle would be my 'dream job', admits Carver
With Alan Pardew on the verge of joining Crystal Palace, his assistant is among those in the frame to take over on a permanent basis, his interest in the role made plain
Newcastle assistant manager John Carver says that taking over from Alan Pardew would be a "dream job" for him.

The 49-year-old was placed in temporary charge at St James's Park on Monday after Pardew was granted permission to speak to Crystal Palace about replacing the sacked Neil Warnock.

Carver - along with Steve Stone - has been asked to organise training and prepare the squad for the Premier League match with Burnley on Thursday and possibly their weekend FA Cup tie against Leicester City.

Asked whether the chance to step up and take to the top job permanently interested him, Carver responded favourably but stopped short of confirming that he would be in the running this time around.

He told reporters: "I think you always have those ambitions, don't you, but you've got to wait for the right opportunity.

"Now the manager looks like going, what's my situation? Only time will tell. My head's going 100 miles an hour here, as you can imagine.

"I think that every coach who goes into football wants to be a manager and there will be a day when I want to be a manager again, there's no doubt about that.

"I'm a local lad and it's a dream job but the manager's still the manager at the moment."

Housewife disarms robbers with hot water

Apart from pouring the scalding water on Oduto, the woman also used the pot to hit his face repeatedly, smashing it beyond recognition.

For descriptive use only

Two armed robbers, Kayode Oduto and Quadri Lateef, got more than they bargained for when they decided to attack the home of a Lagos housewife, who got furious at their effrontery and doused them with hot water, leading to their arrest and are now in the custody of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Ikeja.
The woman, who live with her family at the Kollington area of Alagbado on the outskirts of Lagos, according to police reports, was boiling water to make 'Poundo Yam' for her family when the dare-devils struck, demanding for money and gold. As they were busy ransacking the apartment, the woman sneaked into her kitchen and came back with the boiling water which she poured on Oduto while her husband seized the opportunity to disarm him of his gun and pinned him down. Lateef sensing they were in danger, took to his heels but the woman and her husband's screams alerted other residents who gave him a hot ursuit and apprehended him.
Apart from pouring the scalding water on Oduto, the woman also used the pot to hit his face repeatedly, smashing it beyond recognition.
Police investigators discovered that Lateef used to live in the area where they went to rob. It was gathered through interrogation that it was Lateef who told Oduto that he knew every nook and cranny of the area and was sure his knowledge would make the operation easy. Lateef picked a building, which he told Oduto was inhabited by a rich man, simply known as Mr Charles. When they reached the targeted building, the gate was locked, but the generator was on.
The two men quickly scaled the fence since they knew there were no dogs. Oduto switched off the generator and the two men took strategic positions. Oduto had a cut-to-size locally-made pistol, while Lateef had a toy gun. A few minutes after the generator went off, the owner of the house, Charles, stepped out of the house to find out what went wrong. Oduto pointed a gun at his head and herded him back into the house, while Lateef followed closely behind.
The robbers ordered the man to bring his money and gold. He told them that the money was in the master’s bedroom. As they were walking towards his bedroom, the man suddenly turned and grabbed Oduto, trying to dispossess him of the gun. Rather than assist his partner, a petrified Lateef just stood and watched.
The man was able to pin Oduto down. Lateef who had watched as his partner was pinned down, took to his heels.
A police source narrated the funny incident:
"As Lateef took off, the man shouted thief! thief! His wife, who was cooking in the kitchen, rushed out. She had to use a rechargeable lantern to make out the figures on the ground since the generator was off. She saw her husband struggling to continue to pin Oduto down.
Immediately she realised what was happening, she ran back to the kitchen. She rushed back to the kitchen, came out with the hot water and poured it on the suspect’s face. After she poured him the hot water, she used the pot to hit his face repeatedly. She ran outside and started shouting for help. Other residents ran to help and the police were invited. The suspect’s face was a mess."

SDP May Name Bankole As Its Guber Candidate In Ogun

Ewtw3E4CfZrcUIajbZpD8FWH (1)
If reports reaching us are to be believed, then the former Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Dimeji Bankole and incumbent Governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun would be the two gladiators that would contest for the state’s governorship seat in 2015.
According to P.M NEWS report, indications emerged on Wednesday morning that Bankole may emerge the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP in Ogun State.
It was disclosed that secret meetings are ongoing between aggrieved members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the state many of whom have threatened to leave the party for SDP, a mastermind of former governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba.
It would be recalled that both Bankole and the former governor of the state, Otunba Gbenga Daniel have lost out in their bid to clinch the tickets of both the governorship and Ogun East Senatorial ticket of the PDP.
Bankole lost the governorship ticket to Prince Gboyega Nadir Isiaka while Daniel’s bid to become a Senator was scuttled by Prince Buruj Kashamu.
It was gathered that the aggrieved PDP chieftains which include the former Speaker, Bamkole, the former governor, Daniel and a former Minister and Asiwaju of Ago Iwoye, Chief Jubril Martin Kuye, JMK, have met with Osoba and have reached conclusion on the matter.
At one of the meetings which was held at Osoba’s residence in Ibara GRA, Abeokuta, it was resolved that the governorship ticket will be given to Bankole as he was referred to as a big fish,” one of the governorship aspirants of SDP told P.M NEWS.
The guber aspirant, who does not want his name in the print, said: “Yes, there have been several meetings and at the one of the meetings which I and two other governorship aspirants were in attendance, the issue of the governorship ticket was extensively discussed and it was resolved that the ticket should be given to Bankole.
“I don’t want to mention any names but I can confirm to you that I have dropped my intention to contest for the governorship seat of SDP.
“I can even remember that at that meeting, the issue of Ogun East Senatorial ticket was discussed but we dropped the issue because one of us in the meeting declared that Senator Kaka will never release the ticket to Daniel.
“So we decided that the best thing is to forget about that and focus on how to win the governorship seat with Bankole as our candidate.”
It was reported recently that Governor Amosun stated that he was ready to put an end to the rift between him and Osoba.
According to the report, in a bid to put an end to the conflict that has been going on between him and the former governor, Amosun was said to have appealed to elders in the state to help him beg Osoba for forgiveness if he has done anything wrong.
The incumbent governor reportedly said he was neither in “competition with Osoba” whom he called his “leader” or anybody, added that he would continue to accord him utmost respect.
It would be recalled that the wife of the Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun, recently implored residents of the state to support her husband in the 2015 elections.

Wenger is a specialist in failure’ – the best Premier League quotes of 2014

Steven Gerrard’s unfortunate wording, Tim Sherwood coining the term ‘out-desired’ and the many sayings of Jose Mourinho all feature as Goal looks back on a year in soundbites
Another typically busy year in the Premier League comes to a close and it remains a competition that provokes all manner of discussion. Manchester City may have topped the calendar year’s table on goal difference but who won the war of words? Goal picks out the most memorable quotes of 2014…
Liverpool v Chelsea - Premier League
“This does not f****** slip now.”
– Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard issues a rallying cry to his team after they beat Manchester City 3-2, making very real the possibility of ending their 24-year wait for a league title.
“It gave the title to Manchester City – it’s as simple as that.”
– Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho on Gerrard’s unfortunate slip that let in Demba Ba for the goal that set up a crippling 2-0 defeat for the Reds.
“It’s probably been the worst three months of my life.”
– Liverpool’s bungling of the title is followed by England being unceremoniously dumped out of the World Cup at the group stage, leaving national skipper Gerrard bereft.
733472
“The reality is he’s a specialist because eight years without a piece of silverware … that is failure.”
– The Chelsea manager takes a swipe at his old sparring partner, Arsene Wenger, who does go on to end that wait by taking Arsenal to FA Cup glory in May.
“If one day I go to a game and I don’t feel I can win, maybe I don’t go.”
– Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is next in the Portuguese’s crosshairs after fielding a weakened team against Real Madrid in the Champions League.
“You can win the Champions League in the worst season.”
– Now-Schalke coach Roberto Di Matteo made himself a Blues hero with their European title in 2012 but Mourinho puts his successor-come-predecessor’s achievements in context.
“The title race is between two horses and a little horse that needs milk and needs to learn how to jump.”
– Mourinho insists in February that Chelsea are unlikely to win the title.
“I think it’s clearly the result of something that looks like a campaign.”
– The 51-year-old rounds out the year by returning to his classic material, arguing that the world is conspiring to hold back his team.
467103
“Chelsea are not made to play football. We’re good on the counter, a little bit like Real [Madrid] against Bayern.”
– Eden Hazard’s thoughts on his manager’s style come across a little less complimentary than he might have intended.
“This is football from the 19th century. It’s very difficult to play a football match when only one team wants to play. A football match is about two teams playing. I told Big Sam, they need points. To come here the way they did, is that acceptable? Maybe it is, they need points. The only thing I could bring more was Black & Decker – a Black & Decker to destroy the [West Ham] wall.”
– The Chelsea boss fumes after his side were held to a goalless draw in January.
“I couldn’t give a s***! He just can’t take it. Good old Jose, moaning again.”
– Mourinho’s West Ham counterpart, Sam Allardyce, revels in the frustration.
“The problem with Chelsea is I lack a striker. I have [Samuel] Eto’o but he is 32 years old – maybe 35, who knows?”
– The Portuguese is caught by TV cameras making an unguarded comment to a businessman about the state of his front line.
“I’m Samuel Eto’o. I really don’t care.”
– The Cameroonian delivers the perfect riposte to Mourinho’s doubts about his true age by scoring a goal and celebrating as if we were a hunch-backed old man.
399128
“They need to show a bit more gut.”
– The recently appointed Tottenham manager sets out his philosophy as he slams his chummy players.
“You can’t get out-fought and out-desired. I don’t want to see that again. I won’t tolerate less than 100 per cent desire. I’m their manager, not their babysitter.”
– Tim Sherwood achieves peak Tim Sherwood as he defends his critique of the Spurs squad.
“I just want to wear my heart on my sleeve.”
– Sherwood explains why he threw to the ground his gilet, an already sleeveless garment, during a game.
722432
“I can categorically tell you that [Mario Balotelli] will not be at Liverpool.”
– Brendan Rodgers, 22 days before Mario Balotelli signs for Liverpool.
“It is not something I have even thought about.”
– Rodgers on Saturday, insisting that Balotelli will not be sold after a dreadful start to his Reds career.
“Look at Tottenham; you spend over £100-odd million, you’d expect to be challenging for the league.”
– Rodgers in April, shortly before embarking on a summer spend of over £110m. Liverpool end 2014 eighth in the Premier League, 18 points behind leaders Chelsea.
“They have a choice as a club. They don’t have to sell. Maybe Southampton’s objectives have changed. They were looking to be a Champions League club, I believe. They obviously wanted to change. […] I don’t have sympathy, no.”
– Rodgers after signing Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren from Southampton for a combined £60m. The Saints end 2014 fourth in the Premier League, five points ahead of Liverpool.
“I know how it goes. Six or seven months ago I was the manager of the year and I was going to be this and that, tactically this and tactically that, and now, because we have lost two world-class players, I am useless. But I accept that.
“I must have just dreamt that about Liverpool playing 3-4-3 [against Bournemouth]. What do people think that was, a bit of luck? A British coach playing 3-4-3? A foreign coach doing that would be a tactical genius. I imagine people think I fell into that system through a stroke of luck or something […] it took some thought. I didn’t just throw them out there.”
– As dissatisfaction with how Liverpool’s 2014-15 campaign is going increases, Rodgers hits back at critics of his approach.
NO PUNCHES PULLED
“Shut your noise, you old c***!”
– Newcastle manager Alan Pardew unleashes an eloquent tirade against Manchester City’s Manuel Pellegrini on the touchline. Pardew is less than eight years the Chilean’s junior.
“He is not injured. He’s not fit. He’s not fit to play football, unfortunately. He played in a reserve game the other day and I could have run about more than he did. I can’t pick him.
“I can’t keep protecting people who don’t want to run about and train, who are about three stone overweight. What am I supposed to keep saying? ‘Keep getting your 60, 70 grand a week but don’t train’? What’s the game coming to?”
– QPR boss Harry Redknapp loses patience with mercurial midfielder Adel Taarabt.
“I like Arsene for his principles but principles are sort of a restriction and restrictions are always lost possibilities.”
– Major Arsenal stakeholder Alisher Usmanov explains his eroding faith in the long-serving Wenger.
“It could end up like the Dog & Duck against the Red Lion.”
– Former Manchester United defender turned TV pundit Gary Neville is far from excited about watching his somewhat shaky old side take on the similarly out-of-form Liverpool in December.
“He’s worse than Dracula because at least Dracula comes out of his coffin now and then. He seems to stay on his line and that’s it.”
– Recently dropped Reds goalkeeper Simon Mignolet takes a kicking from Liverpool hero Bruce Grobbelaar.
“It was Tottenham at home. I thought: ‘Please don’t go on about Tottenham, we all know what Tottenham are about. They are nice and tidy but we’ll f****** do them.’ Alex came in and said: ‘Lads, it’s only Tottenham.’ And that was it! Brilliant!”
– Ex-Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane fondly recalls Sir Alex Ferguson’s team talks at Old Trafford.
“I got Robbie’s mobile number and rang him. It went to his voicemail: ‘Hi, it’s Robbie – whazzup!’ Like the Budweiser ad. I never called him back. I thought: ‘I can’t be f****** signing that.”
– Keane feels less complimentary about the time when he considered signing Robbie Savage for Sunderland.
381587
“We have played a very good side, playing at the sort of level we are aspiring to. We need to come up a couple of levels ourselves because at the moment we are not there.”
– Soon-to-be-ex-Manchester United manager David Moyes on rivals Manchester City after losing to them 3-0 at home, a far cry from Sir Alex Ferguson’s “noisy neighbours”.
“My fellow players are sometimes occupying the spaces I want to play in. That forces me to adjust my runs, based on the position of my fellow players. Unfortunately, they’re often playing in my zones. I think that’s a shame”
– Robin van Persie magnanimously tries to explain his poor form for Moyes’s side in February.
“Everything is s*** because we lost.”
– Southampton boss Ronald Koeman takes his team’s 2-1 defeat by Manchester United badly

Agbaje Can’t Govern Lagos, Says Fashola

n15p5XV5fJq0KW2vkAA32jEa
Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola says Lagos State is too big to be handed over to the Peoples Democratic Party’s, PDP, governorship candidate, Jimi Agbaje to experiment with as he lacks experience.
Fashola, who spoke on Tuesday at a Town Hall Meeting with artisans and tradesmen, said the All Progressive Congress, APC, candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode, should be trusted to govern and lead Lagos State in the right direction as he has the needed experience to do so, having beein in government for 27 years.
Though the governor did not mention Agbaje’s name,  he was referring to him when he advised Lagosians not to trade experience in government business for experiment and trial and error that the opposition (PDP) wanted to bank on.
According to him, Ambode is better suited for the state’s number one job because of his competence saying he worked with him for over six years as Accountant General of the State and would start from where he handed over the baton to him.
He said he could thump his chest and vouch for the governorship candidate of the APC in Lagos State as one who would be a worthy successor to him.
Backing his contention with several anecdotes, the governor urged residents of Lagos not to make the mistake of electing someone without cognate experience who would only end up wobbling and fumbling with the fortunes of Lagos.
Fashola stated that he was ready to defend his stewardship in office at any time and at any forum if called upon to do so because his government had been very impactful to the lives of the average residents of the state.
He thanked the artisans, tradesmen and farmers for their honesty and truthfulness about the positive change that has come into their lives through the activities of the State Government in the informal sector.
The governor said he wholeheartedly supports their request for a continuation of the prosperity that is being enjoyed in the informal and agricultural sector under the present administration, adding that the only way such continuity could be actualized is by voting to ensure that the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerges victorious at all levels in Lagos State and the federal elevel in 2015.
He stressed that this is the time and period for Nigerians to make very important decisions about their lives as the elections approach and that the people should be bold to take up their leaders on what they have done with the time they have spent in office before asking for renewal of tenures.
The governor added that when President Goodluck Jonathan was seeking the votes of Nigerians before his first term in office, one of his sloganeering catch phrases was that as a child he had no shoes and walked barefooted but that now the campaigns would be about issues as the era of having no shoes to curry sympathy was gone.
Fashola said the President also made several promises such as the one he made in Lagos during the campaigns in 2011, where he promised to reconstruct the road leading to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, adding that four years after, nothing had happened in Lagos.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, running mate to Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, the APC presidential candidate, called on Nigerians not to vote for President Goodluck Jonathan, as doing so will only attract hunger.
He said Nigeria under Jonathan had already entrenched deep poverty and that retaining him for a second term would mean more hunger, and that the time had come for power to change hand at the centre.
Also speaking, the APC Lagos governorship candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode said APC from the period of Bola Tinubu to Governor Babatunde Fashola has continuously provided good governance to the people of the state, saying if voted into power, his government would not deviate from the principle.
He appealed to Lagos residents to vote massively for him during the governorship election and for General Buhari at the presidential election next year.
“Our promise to you as a party is to provide good governance and able leadership. We want to take good care of your businesses. If you have been making N1000 profit before, what we want for you is, after providing all the facilities you need for your business, that your profit swells to N10, 000.
“We know that when you make more profit, you will have more to take care of yourself, your children and your home. We promise not to stress you with our policies. I also want to remind you that no matter what we do, if we do not take over the central government, we may be hindered in a way and may not be able to provide all that we want to provide for you,” he said.
According to Ambode, “there must be change of government at the Federal level. APC must take over in Abuja. In Lagos, we remember where the former Governor Bola Tinubu started from and how Governor Fashola consolidated on his achievements and raised the bar, that is what we want to continue in Lagos.”

Jonathan Reacts To Use Of Social Media Worldwide

5HEit8RKX298Qzsz5hHT36t9
President Goodluck Jonathan has reportedly given a shocking reaction to the use of social media worldwide.
NAN reports that the President, who met with a delegation of traditional rulers and leaders from Bayelsa, on Tuesday, in Abuja, said the use of social media worldwide is creating social discontent and anarchy in the society.
Jonathan said that the social media initially meant for good had become a tool to disseminate evil.
“These days, there are all kinds of stories. It is all over the world; leaders are being lambasted, especially with the social media now. People use what knowledge had created for negative reasons. Just as I was told that the person who invented dynamite, later regretted that invention because he thought he was coming up with something to solve human problem. But when he got to know about the level of destruction, human lives that are being blown up because of explosion, the man regretted that invention. What is supposed to be used for the common good was turned to negative purposes. I always say that I will not even expect praises now because hardly do people praise serving leaders. It is when you leave, people will begin to know. When you leave, they will begin to compare what you have done over the period vis-a-vis what others have done. Then they will compare you with whoever takes over,” Jonathan said.
Mr. President promised the traditional rulers that he will do his best in creating an enabling environment for the nation’s economy to thrive, notwithstanding the challenges facing the nation.
“I will do my best so that by the time I will leave, you will be able to say that when our son was there, he served the country well so that one day, another son of Bayelsa may be given another opportunity to serve Nigerians. I assure you that I am here by the grace of God with the willingness of Nigerians. If Nigerians say I shouldn’t be here, I wouldn’t have been here. We contested election in 2011 and Nigerians voted for us. I am your own. If I don’t do well, the shame will be on you. If I do well, you will have some kind of pride. I will do my best,” he said.
Jonathan stated that 2015 will be full of challenges for Nigerians because of the early elections, noting that from Friday, everywhere will be overheated.
Speaking earlier on behalf of the delegation, Bayelsa state Governor, Seriake Dickson, said they were in the State House to felicitate with the President and his family in the spirit of the festive season.
Dickson reassured the President of the unrelenting support of Bayelsa people, and commended him for his transformation agenda which, he (Dickson) said, was impacting positively on Nigerians.
The governor also assured that the President’s home state was peaceful and was in safe hands.
The guests who were among the delegation include: the Amayanabo of Town-Brass, Mr Alfred Diete-Spiff, the state Chief Judge, former Managing Director of NDCC, Mr Timi Alaibe, traditional rulers, clerics, among others.
It would be recalled that Dickson has already projected that the President Jonathan, will defeat Mohammadu Buhari come 2015 presidential elections.

Police Boss Warns Against Terror Attacks

As Nigerians continue to prepare for the New Year Celebrations, the Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has advised worshippers on how to prevent terror attacks at worship centres.
According to a statement released on Wednesday, December, 31, 2014, by the Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, the police boss urged Christians and Muslims in the country as they attend Jummat and Church services tonight to reduce the number of vehicles around their worship centres.
Due to the security challenges in the country, the police boss equally advised operators of motor parks, shopping malls and recreation centres to work very closely with the police and other security agencies as they strive to strengthen security in their respective facilities.
The Inspector-General of Police informed that he had directed all Zonal AIGs and State Command Commissioners of Police to ensure an efficient deployment of all operational manpower and tools at the disposal of their respective Commands.
The statement further stated that Abba has also directed the AIG Border Patrol to ensure that the nation’s borders are effectively manned to prevent any cross-border crime.
It added that the AIG Air Wing has been directed to provide aerial patrol at the Federal Capital Territory and other States.
“The Inspector-General of Police, while wishing all Nigerians a very blissful and peaceful New Year celebration, assures Nigerians of the Nigeria Police Force readiness and commitment towards ensuring a free and fair 2015 general elections.
“While saluting the courage and gallantry of officers and men of the Force for their tireless services in protecting lives and property during the year, the IG charges Police personnel to continue to be civil in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities. He, however, warns that officers found acting contrary to the Force’s vision and mission will be appropriately sanctioned,” the statement read in parts.

Manchester City - Sunderland Preview: Poyet wary of champions' backlash

Manchester City - Sunderland Preview: Poyet wary of champions' backlash
The reigning Premier League winners missed a chance to close the gap on Chelsea last time out and the Black Cats boss expects them to have a reaction on New Year's Day
Gus Poyet has warned Sunderland to be wary of a Manchester City backlash when the sides meet in the Premier League on Thursday.

The reigning champions had the opportunity to close the gap on leaders Chelsea to just one point heading into the new year when they hosted Burnley on Sunday - as Jose Mourinho's men had drawn 1-1 at Southampton in an earlier kick-off.

However, Manuel Pellegrini's men surprisingly surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with the strugglers, meaning that the Blues remain three points clear at the top of the table.

Sunderland manager Poyet believes that the setback could stir City and is well aware that his team will need to play to their maximum potential to leave the Etihad Stadium with three points.

"Now [City] have drawn and it's a little bit of a wake-up call so I don't know, we will see," he told reporters.

"We know Manchester City, we know how good they are, we know the quality they have got. We need to make sure that we are good on the day."

Poyet remains without full-backs Anthony Reveillere (calf) and Patrick van Aanholt (shoulder), while midfielder Liam Bridcutt is on the sidelines after suffering a concussion in Sunderland's 0-0 draw at Aston Villa on Sunday. Midfielder Sebastian Larsson, though, is expected to shake off an ankle complaint in time to feature.

City may have slipped up against Burnley but, prior to the meeting with Sean Dyche's men, they had clocked up seven straight league victories.

One of those successes came against Sunderland on December 3, with Poyet admitting that his team could not cope with the quality of Sergio Aguero - who scored twice in a 4-1 away win. The Uruguayan will not have that problem to contemplate this time, though, as the Argentine striker remains sidelined with a knee injury.

Captain Vincent Kompany (hamstring), striker Edin Dzeko (calf) and centre-back Matija Nastasic (muscular injury) are also out for City, while midfielder Fernando is suspended, having clocked up five yellow cards.

Pellegrini - who confirmed that midfielder Frank Lampard is able to play despite the impending end of his loan deal from sister club New York City FC - has enjoyed a 2014 that brought a Premier League and League Cup double last season and he is hoping to start 2015 in the right fashion against Sunderland - whom they defeated in the League Cup final.

"In general it [2014] has been successful," he said. "We have the next five months now to continue to improve the way we play.

"I hope we start the new year winning three points. Sunderland are a good team with a good manager. They have strong players."

Southampton considering buying a forward, says Koeman

Southampton considering buying a forward, says Koeman
The Saints manager is determined not to lose any more players in January and could follow up the loan acquisition of winger Eljero Elia with another body up front

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman is eager to bolster his squad in the January transfer window, with forward options a particular priority.

Koeman was active during the most recent window, as he brought in the likes of Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Toby Alderweireld to help cover a mass exodus during the close-season.

Southampton have coped well since that hectic summer and currently sit fourth in the top flight. However, with Jay Rodriguez injured and Emmanuel Mayuka and Sadio Mane due to represent their countries at the Africa Cup of Nations in January, the boss feels that there is a need for reinforcements.

Having already agreed the loan arrival of Eljero Elia from Werder Bremen, Koeman is also eager to tie up the futures of fellow loanees Alderweireld and Ryan Bertrand.

"I think only to bring in players, not to lose players," he told reporters on Wednesday.

"We spoke inside with everyone about the team, the positions. If we need another player it will be an attacker.

"Elia is a good signing for us because I like that player, it's part of our way of playing. We like to play with wing players, fast players.

"The situation [with our loanees] is clear. I spoke to Toby that I would like him to stay but it's up to the player. He will get time to think on his future but, like Bertrand, we want to keep those type of players. They are showing their qualities already this year and we'd like to keep that."

Southampton face Arsenal on the south coast on Thursday with the sides separated only by goal difference and both tipped to secure a top-four berth this season.

Koeman acknowledged his delight at how the season was progressing but urged his side not to let up.

"Yes, everyone is delighted by the way we played the first half of the season, the points we have are well deserved and [it] shows the club is growing," he added.

"We like that because we do everything for that, we keep going. The philosophy is to bring in young players and a lot made their debuts. It's very good but we have to go on."

Tevez: I won't renew with Juventus

Tevez: I won't renew with Juventus
The Argentine has enjoyed a fine run of form since his move to Turin but admits he doesn't plan to stay with the Old Lady past 2016
Carlos Tevez has revealed he has no plans to extend his current contract with Juventus.
The Argentine has been in fine form since his move to the Serie A champions and is currently their top scorer in the league.

However, Tevez has no desire to continue his legacy in Turin past his current deal.
“I want to respect my contract until 2016,” he told reporters at Buenos Aires airport, “That's my plan.
“I don't want to extend, that's not how I feel at the moment.”
When asked if he would consider a return to boyhood club Boca Juniors, the 30-year-old urged calmness on any decisions regarding his future.
“It's too hard to say right now,” he said, “I'm playing at a high level so it's important to be calm and enjoy being in the moment.
“Constant speculation would drive me crazy.”

Manchester City can't afford to spend much in January - Pellegrini

Manchester City can't afford to spend much in January - Pellegrini
The reigning Premier League champions fell foul of Financial Fair Play rules last year and the manager says that not much can be done to improve a squad three points behind Chelsea

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini doubts that his side will do much business in the January transfer window as they "have restrictions on money".

The reigning Premier League champions have spent extensively in recent years since their acquisition by Abu Dhabi United Group but were sanctioned for breaches of Uefa’s Financial Fair Play rules this year.

"No, I don't think we will be busy," Pellegrini told reporters on Wednesday of his plans for the window. "We have restrictions on money."

One successful summer arrival was that of Frank Lampard on loan from New York City FC and the Chilean is hopeful of extending the former England international's stay beyond its initially agreed end date of January, adding: "I hope [he will be with us] until the end of the season."

City could still sell one or two fringe players, with Pellegrini confirming that they would be willing to move on Matija Nastasic and Scott Sinclair if buyers come forward.

"If they have another option [in January] that is good for them and the club, we will see," he said.

Pellegrini's side end 2014 three points behind league leaders Chelsea, with Sunderland their visitors on New Year's Day, and the manager is keen to use that game as a springboard for an even better 2015.

He continued: "I hope we start the New Year winning three points. [Sunderland are] a good team with a good manager. They have strong players.

"In general, [2014] has been successful. We have the next five months now to continue to improve the way we play."

Influential midfielder Yaya Toure will be available to take on the Black Cats, Pellegrini explained, before leaving on January 5 to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast, though Edin Dzeko and captain Vincent Kompany remain on the sidelines with injury.

David Silva: Smaller sides are more difficult to beat

David Silva: Smaller sides are more difficult to beat
The Spain international believes the Premier League's struggling teams provide the hardest opposition because 'they play every game as though it's their last of the season'

Manchester City midfielder David Silva believes the sides at the foot of the Premier League are harder to beat than those around them in the table.

The champions have lost just twice in the league so far this season, but did drop two points on Sunday when they were held to a 2-2 draw by Burnley at the Etihad Stadium.

Silva, 28, scored the opening goal against the Clarets, who came from 2-0 down to salvage a point, taking his tally to four goals in his last three games.

"Some people have looked at our fixtures over the past few weeks and said that we should win them all, but football doesn’t work like that,” said the Spanish star.

"It’s a cliché, sure, but as Burnley proved, every game is difficult in the Premier League and it is a very long season."

City could go level on points with leaders Chelsea on Thursday, if they can beat Sunderland, with Jose Mourinho's side involved in the late kick-off when they face Tottenham.

The Black Cats sit 14th in the table and have won just one of their last nine matches, but Silva is still expecting a challenge.

"Any team can beat you if you’re not at your best and I believe playing sides that are struggling to find form and are near the bottom of the league is worse than a run against teams near the top because they play every game as though it’s their last one of the season.

"We just need to return to winning ways quickly and not dwell on the Burnley result too much."

Mkhitaryan: It makes me sad to see Klopp like this

Mkhitaryan: It makes me sad to see Klopp like this
The 47-year-old trainer is under intense pressure on account of BVB's dismal first half to the Bundesliga season, much to the dismay of the Armenia international
Henrikh Mkhitaryan has admitted that he is saddened by the fact that Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp's job is under scrutiny.

Klopp has won two Bundesliga titles with BVB, while he also led the Signal Iduna Park side to the final of the 2013 Champions League, establishing himself as one of the most highly rated coaches in the game.

However, the 47-year-old is now under intense pressure, with Dortmund currently 17th in the German top flight after a dreadful first half to their domestic campaign.

Mkhitaryan, though, insists that Klopp is not to blame for BVB's dismal form and is thus desperate for the players to come to their coach's aid by racking up some badly needed points when the Bundesliga resumes at the end of January.

"It makes me sad to see him like this," the attacking midfielder told Bild. "He is always there for us, and it is all the more frustrating that we are not able to make him happy by winning again."

Dortmund will be hoping to kickstart their campaign when they face Bayer Leverkusen on January 31.

Rodgers: Liverpool don't need many new players

Rodgers: Liverpool don't need many new players
The Reds have struggled for consistency this season as they enter 2015 eighth in the Premier League table, but the former Swansea boss is happy with how his side is progressing

Brendan Rodgers does not expect there to be much transfer activity at Liverpool when the window opens for business on Saturday.

After agonisingly losing out on the Premier League title by just two points last season, the Reds have found the going much tougher in the 2014-15 campaign.

With half of the season gone, Rodgers' side have already lost seven matches and they will start 2015 against Leicester City on Thursday in eighth place - some 18 points adrift of leaders Chelsea.

The Anfield outfit were expected to try and bolster their squad in the transfer window, with a goalkeeper thought to be a top priority due to question marks over the quality and form of Simon Mignolet and Brad Jones.

However, Rodgers does not believe that January is the right time to alter his team and stated he will only delve into the market if the right calibre of player becomes available.

"There won't be much if any transfer activity from us during the transfer window," the Northern Irishman on Wednesday.

"I don't think January is a good time to spend. I'm happy with how the group is progressing after a tough start to the season.

"If there's something that can improve us, I'll take that to the owners."

Ibrahimovic: I'm not leaving PSG for Roma

Ibrahimovic: I'm not leaving PSG for Roma
A Swedish journalist had stated that the national team captain was keen on a return to Serie A but the 33-year-old attacker says he is going nowhere

Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has rubbished a report that he is considering joining Roma.
Swedish journalist Jennifer Wegerup claimed that the former Juventus, Inter and AC Milan forward was keen on a return to Serie A and was weighing up a move to the Stadio Olimpico.
However, Ibrahimovic has unequivocally denied that he has any intention of leaving the Parc des Princes, or linking up with the Giallorossi.
"I will not return to Serie A," the 33-year-old stated. "Someone has spoken about it, someone else has even announced it, but there's no truth in it.
"I'm fine in Paris and I still have a year left on my PSG contract.
"Then, we'll see what happens. But I repeat: I'm happy in Paris. Someone else has invented this story."
Ibrahimovic has previously suggested that he could retire when his current deal with PSG expires in 2016 but the ex-Barcelona attacker says he will only call it a day when he feels he can no longer hack it at the top level.
"I hope that the Zlatan of today is still the best Zlatan because I'm trying to improve myself every season," he added.
"As long as I can still progress, I want to play. But the day that no longer happens, then I'll quit."

Ibrahimovic won a total of six Serie A titles during his time in Italy, though the two he won with Juve were revoked because of the club's involvement in the 'Calciopoli' scandal.
