Wenger calls for retrospective diving bans

Wenger calls for retrospective diving bans
The Frenchman believes the only way to rid the game of play-acting is to suspend the culprits, but admitted that sometimes it is not easy to reach a conclusive decision

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has called for the Football Association (FA) to retrospectively ban players found guilty of simulation.

Diving has been a major topic of debate in England, with Premier League leaders Chelsea having been at the centre of a number of contentious incidents in recent weeks.

Diego Costa and Willian were both booked for simulation during the Blues' 2-0 win over Hull City on December 13, while team-mate Gary Cahill controversially avoided a second yellow card for a dramatic fall that Steve Bruce described as "like something out of Swan Lake".
However, Cesc Fabregas was then unfairly admonished against Southampton, prompting Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho to claim that there is a "campaign" against his club.

Wenger freely admits that it can sometimes be difficult to determine a deliberate dive but the Frenchman still feels that drastic action has to be taken to rid the game of simulation.

"I am against diving and the only way players will stop doing it is if they can get punished," the Gunners boss said. "We should punish [players] after the game.

"The problem will be to decide when it was obvious diving or not. That is a big issue and sometimes it is not obvious."
