Beji Caid Essebsi, 88, is the new Tunisian president. Essebsi was sworn in today as Tunisia ’s first freely elected president. He was the speaker of parliament under President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011. He pledged to work towards national reconciliation shortly after taking his oath of office.
