Houston woman who married herself claps back at her critics

On January 3rd, Houston woman Yasmin Eleby married herself after finding herself still single at 40. Read the story here. She got a lot of bashing from the online community for marrying herself. Many didn't agree with her methods and slammed her for it, many others mocked her. Well, Yasmin has clapped back at her critics, and says she doesn't regret her decision...
"The ceremony is not about me being bitter for not having a man. It wasn’t like, “OK, I’m upset that I’m 40 and don’t have a man.” I wanted to show myself my self-love, my self-worth and my self-respect. It was always about me loving me. When God sends me my husband, he will come, but until then, I’m OK with it just being with me." Continue
Yasmin sat down with The Root to discuss why she did it and why her family and friends didn't stop her...

Yasmin Eleby: For a few years leading up to my 40th birthday, I’d been joking that if I didn’t have a wedding by 40 that I would just have one myself without a groom. I thought having a wedding ceremony would be a unique way to celebrate my 40th with my family and my friends. And the closer that it got, I realized I had to put up or shut up.

The Root: I’ve been reading the reactions to all the stories on you, and a common comment is, “Where were her friends? They didn’t stop her!” When you told your friends—like, “Hey, guys, I’m going to have a wedding and marry myself!”—what did they say?
Yasmin Eleby: Some of them didn’t believe me. They thought I was joking, but once I explained to them what it would be about, they were supportive.

The Root: When the invites for the ceremony went out to guests, what was their response?
Yasmin Eleby: Not very many people knew it was a wedding. It was kind of a surprise. The invitations just said come celebrate my birthday in a unique way. I invited two of my exes. They were both happy for me. They were excited about it once they got there and realized what was happening.

The Root: A lot of people have assumed that marrying yourself was an act of desperation. What exactly was the ceremony about for you?
Yasmin Eleby: The ceremony is not about me being bitter for not having a man. It wasn’t like, “OK, I’m upset that I’m 40 and don’t have a man.” I wanted to show myself my self-love, my self-worth and my self-respect. It was always about me loving me. When God sends me my husband, he will come, but until then, I’m OK with it just being with me.

The Root: What vows did you take during the ceremony?
Yasmin Eleby: The first one was about forgiving myself. We’ve all made mistakes. I had to realize that if I ask for forgiveness, then it’s done. I don’t have to keep dwelling on the past. I can let it go. My second vow was to honor myself as a beautiful, fabulous being, conscious of making decisions for myself and to honor my self-worth. The third vow was love. I made a promise to love myself and to know that the more love I have for myself, the more love I have to share with others.

The Root: This all sounds so sweet, but it’s been received in a much different light. What do you think of the reactions to your ceremony?
Yasmin Eleby: It has been blown way out of proportion. From the few comments that I’ve read, they’re trying to paint me as crazy or bitter about not having a husband, and that is so not the case. I’m not bitter, I‘m not crazy. I’m just a fun-loving unique individual, and I just wanted to do something special and different.

The Root: In hindsight, do you have any regrets about the ceremony?
Yasmin Eleby: Not one.

Hint: there are four differences..

'No chance' of Cuadrado joining Chelsea, insists Montella

The Fiorentina winger was rumoured to be in attendance as the Blues drew with Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday but his coach is adamant he will not be sold
'No chance' of Cuadrado joining Chelsea, insists Montella
Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella is adamant that there is "no chance" of Juan Cuadrado joining Chelsea.

The Colombia winger has been linked with a move to the Premier League title-chasers in the January transfer window and reports claimed he attended their League Cup draw with Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday as a guest of the Blues' kit manufacturer.

However, Jose Mourinho professed to know nothing of such a visit from the 26-year-old, who only completed a switch to full ownership by the Tuscan club in 2014.

Cuadrado underlined his value to Fiorentina with a penalty in the 3-1 Coppa Italia victory over Atalanta on Wednesday, sending his side into the quarter-finals in a game which also saw Mario Gomez score twice to break his goal drought and Montella told the press afterwards that the winger is not going anywhere.

"To date, there is no chance that Cuadrado leaves Fiorentina," the Fiorentina coach stated.

"He knows that some things are exaggerated."

Chelsea are keeping a close eye on the Colombian's situation at the Artemio Franchi due to the uncertainty over the future of Andre Schurrle and Mohamed Salah at Stamford Bridge.

The Germany international has been linked with a move to Wolfsburg, while the Egyptian attacker has caught the attention of Roma, who are hopeful of bringing him to Serie A on loan until the end of the season.

Mourinho has so far stressed that he's keen to keep his current squad together, but he could turn to Cuadrado if one of the aforementioned attackers were to leave.

The former Udinese man has a contract with Fiorentina until June 2019, but has a buy-out clause of €35 million in his existing deal.

Chelsea can win the quadruple, boasts Courtois

The Belgium international was in sensational form against Liverpool in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday and insists he is part of a squad that can win four trophies this season
Chelsea can win the quadruple, boasts Courtois
Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois insists his manager Jose Mourinho is wrong to dismiss his side's chances of landing an unprecedented quadruple this season.

The Belgium international goalkeeper produced a man-of-the-match display at Anfield on Tuesday which helped secure a 1-1 draw against Liverpool in the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg as the Blues remained on course to secure the first domestic silverware of the new season.

Chelsea, who currently have a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League, face lower-league opposition in the fourth round of the FA Cup and have been drawn against Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the Champions League,

And, in contradiction to his manager's public stance, Courtois feels confident he is part of a squad that is capable of maintaining a fight on four fronts.

"It will be hard but we have the team that can win everything," he told reporters. "Obviously there are a lot of teams that can win too. It will be hard, but it’s what we’re aiming for.

"If we can play in a final and win it, you get that feeling to win trophies and you want to win more and more.

"That feeling is in the whole group now, especially after what happened last season when they didn’t win anything and were close to some trophies. You want to win everything that’s possible, starting with the League Cup.

"I think the draw at Liverpool is a good result. Now the second leg will be like a final, in front of our fans I think we have to be able to win.

"Our home record gives us confidence. We know we are strong at home. Liverpool have been playing really well these last few weeks and are really dangerous. We know it will be tough, but I think we are able to do more at home - we have to win that game.

"The new players like myself, Diego Costa, Filipe Luis, Cesc Fabregas and the rest of the team want to win trophies for Chelsea. That starts in the League Cup and until the last game in the Champions League.
“We want to win everything, it will be difficult, but I think we have the team to do it.

"We are playing well and we have passed through in all competitions. Now we are in the semi-final of the Capital One Cup, are top of the League, there is an important game in the FA Cup [against Bradford] on Saturday which we have to win and soon we will be playing Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League."

Despite a closing gap, things can only get better for Real Madrid

COMMENT: The European champions saw their lead cut in the financial standings, but sustained success and sustainable business models will see them get even stronger
Despite a closing gap, things can only get better for Real Madrid

Real Madrid are celebrating a "Doble Decima" after the publication of the 2015 Deloitte Money League. Last season the club captured their 10th European title by defeating city rivals Atletico Madrid in Lisbon. Now, this year starts with a bang as the European champions post record revenue to finish as the world's highest-earning club for a 10th consecutive year.

As impressive as Carlo Ancelotti's team have been on the field over the past 12 months, that hard work is backed up by consistent revenue growth off it. Real Madrid made a record €549.5 million during the 2013-14 season according to the 2015 Money League, thereby increasing their total by around €31m on the year before.

"With revenue of almost €550m, continued commercial success and the imminent commencement of a substantial stadium redevelopment, it looks very likely that Los Merengues will continue to enjoy top spot in next year’s edition," the Deloitte press release stated.

Barcelona, Real Madrid's major domestic rival, saw an uplift in their income too but only by €2m to €484.6m over the 12 months. In the process, Barca plummeted from second place to fourth in the money table and are now behind Manchester United and Bayern Munich. It indicates that Barcelona's success, which went unchecked for so long, is now shrivelling.

For a time during those titanic Clasico battles under Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola, it seemed those two would never be caught either in football or commercially. Barca, though, are paying the price for a potless season last time out, and for acrimony in the boardroom. Real, meanwhile, go from strength to strength thanks to the stability in their performances and the relentlessness of their money-making project.

Deloitte's Money League assesses revenues in three different categories - matchday, broadcast and commercial, with Madrid performing well on all counts with significant hopes for the future too.

Real Madrid's matchday revenue total currently stands at a mammoth €113.8m Though that is beneath the sums currently earned by Barcelona and United, it will only go up once the extensive €400m redevelopment of Santiago Bernabeu is complete.

The project, being carried out by German firm GMP, will include a retail area, hotel and restaurants. It will significantly boost the matchday spending of consumers at the historic arena. The estimated date of completion is in time for the 2020-21 season, with work due to begin as soon as this summer. Moreover, construction costs are expected to be covered by selling off the naming rights to the highest bidder.

Kit manufacturer Adidas was forced to deny that 345,000 "James 10" shirts were shifted in the 48 hours after the Colombian's signing last summer. Nonetheless, a leading sport PR marketing firm estimates that Real sell an average of around 1.6 million jerseys per season, more than any other team on the planet.

Commercial revenue increased from €211.6m to €231.5m in the 2015 Money League with the club enjoying a lucrative shirt sponsorship deal with the Emirates airline. Real also benefit from arrangements with global brands like Microsoft, Audi, Bwin, IPIC and Samsung. Their Adidas kit deal is reported to be worth some €40m per season alone.

Broadcast revenue has spiked again this year with €204.2m being banked. It is the first time in the 18-year history of the Deloitte Money List that over €200m was made by any one club on broadcast revenues. A run to the Champions League final will have certainly helped on this front. Real picked up €20.5m from their "market pool" which is derived from the total sum paid for the television rights in a team's domestic market.

Furthermore, they were reported to have made €140m from just their Liga games last season, dwarfing the €42m made by champions Atletico. Between them, Barcelona and Real split around 35 per cent of all Spanish television money. That is a function of Spain's lopsided TV rights arrangement, which ensures Real and Barca rake in the lion's share of revenue. The television rights for Spain's top flight are up for re-negotiation at the end of next season with a collective deal expected to be agreed. Madrid, even with the other 19 clubs in tow, will earn more than they do now.

Money League 2015

Real's success shows no sign of slowing down but they might, however, be looking over their shoulders in a couple of years time on the Deloitte Money League.

Manchester United are likely to drop down a few places next year when their current lack of Champions League football is taken into account. But they should bounce back in 2016 with a return to the Champions League as well as through various other impending windfalls.

“The Manchester United situation is particularly interesting in that in next year’s Money League, given they haven’t got Champions League football this year, we expect them to drop – they may not even make the top five," Deloitte's Senior Manager Austin Houlihan told Goal.

"But the year after, providing they qualify for the Champions League, the Money League covering the season 2015-16 it is not unreasonable for Manchester United to potentially be at the top.

“The continued commercial uplift, with the kit deal, but also with the Champions League uplift, and the Premier League broadcast redistributions as well, there is potential for them to be top."

Real Madrid might have company at the top of football's money tree in the years to come but it will have nothing to do with complacency. With the Bernabeu being rebuilt, commercial deals secure for the years ahead and a new TV windfall to come, Madrid have the processes in place to ensure their place among the super-rich is set in stone.

Gabriel is a decent buy, but Arsenal should be looking at another Villarreal defender

COMMENT: The Brazilian defender plugs a clear gap in the Gunners squad, but his Yellow Submarine team-mate is arguably the better player
Gabriel is a decent buy, but Arsenal should be looking at another Villarreal defender

Who is responsible for slipping a little something into Arsene Wenger’s coffee these past few weeks? The Professor has stunned Arsenal fans with some logical decision-making. After producing their most accomplished away performance in years against Manchester City on Sunday, the club are set to reinforce a long-standing weak area of the team by acquiring Villarreal defender Gabriel.
The impressive centre-back has been identified as the Gunners’ prime transfer target, and on the surface the approach appears to be shrewd. The Brazilian has been an ever-present in La Liga as part of a back line that has conceded just 17 goals – only Barcelona and Real Madrid have a superior record. The 24-year-old is yet another talent to emerge from Villarreal’s network of knowledge and target identification in South America, one that in the past decade has unveiled the likes of Juliano Belletti, Marcos Senna and Diego Godin.
More recently, Swansea’s Jefferson Montero and current starlet Luciano Vietto have emerged and Gabriel, brought in for just €3.5 million from Vitorio in the summer of 2013, has proved to be another inspired piece of business.
But are Arsenal shopping for the wrong defender? Wenger's scouts regularly attend matches at El Madrigal, so Gabriel's team-mate Mateo Musacchio will be more than well-known to them, but on many levels the man referred to by coach Marcelino as ‘a momentous player’ seems the more attractive option.
Arriving in Spain as an 18-year-old in 2009, Musacchio has matured into one of the most accomplished centre-backs in a European market suffering from a dearth of aptitude in that department. No-one in Spain made more interceptions than him in 2013-14 and, while both he and Gabriel are comfortable in possession and can be uncompromising in the tackle, Musacchio’s previous proficiency playing in central midfield sets him apart with the ball at his feet.
Furthermore, he has featured in over 180 games for Villarreal and, at the same age as Gabriel, has leadership qualities and experience unmatched by his Latin American compatriot. Musacchio also holds an Italian passport and will not suffer from the regulatory issues that Gabriel could bring – the Brazilian has neither featured enough for his national side to gain an automatic work permit, nor has he lived in Spain long enough to be granted citizenship.
It may be a case of out of sight, out of mind as far as Arsenal are concerned. The Argentine has missed much of this season with a thigh injury, starting just five league matches, while Gabriel has thrived in his absence, his all-round game developng rapidly in that period.
It might also be the case that Arsenal don't want to become embroiled in a complex ownership situation. Tottenham moved for Musacchio last summer but Villarreal, former club River Plate and his management agency all hold respective shares in his sporting rights. The Spanish club were hopeful of securing a sizeable fee but after protracted negotiations a deal couldn’t be reached. It’s clear that Musacchio would cost sizeably more to acquire than Gabriel, who Arsenal believe will be sold for in the region of €10m. However, Villarreal are currently debt-free and are keen to hold out for his buyout clause, which is set at €20m.
Ultimately, it comes down to Wenger, and what he is looking for. He clearly sees Gabriel as cover for his first-choice pairing of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, and given his vocal desire to move to England, feels that he is in a strong negotiating position to pressurise Villarreal into meeting a more modest valuation.
But Mertesacker is 30 and Koscielny 29. Whilst not veterans they are no longer in their prime, with the former having already squeezed 550 games into his career. Some foresight is required here – choose a back-up, and a very good one at that, or a ready-made, potentially world class centre-half in Musacchio, even if it means making more of a statement with the transfer fee?
The prudence administered while paying off the Emirates Stadium is well and truly over, as the purchases of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez made clear. A willingness to spend expansively in defence would be a statement that Arsenal are serious – and that disciplined defending like the kind seen at the Etihad last weekend is here to stay.
