With the January transfer window now under way, Goal looks back at the worst deals to have gone through during the mid-season splash. Honourable mentions include Stan Collymore to Real Oviedo, Afonso Alves to Middlesbrough and Arsenal's disastrous signing of Kim Kallstrom (pictured)...

20) NICOLAS ANELKA | Shanghai Shenhua to Juventus on loan (2013) | One of many Premier League has-beens to have dabbled in Serie A in the twilight of their careers only to prove completely inadequate.

19) MANICHE | Atletico Madrid to Inter on loan (2008) | After falling out with Atletico's coach, Maniche's temporary move to Inter never really worked out.

18) MARIO BALOTELLI | Manchester City to AC Milan for €20m (2013) | One of the more controversial options because Balotelli was actually really good in his first six months. However, the goals became less frequent in his second season with the Rossoneri and he was acrimoniously offloaded to Liverpool last summer.

17) URBY EMANUELSON | Ajax to AC Milan for €2.5m (2011) | Impressing at Ajax was enough to earn the Dutchman a move to San Siro, but he never realised his potential in Italy.

16) IBRAHIM AFELLAY | PSV to Barcelona for €3m (2011) | The Dutchman was in the final year of his contract when Barca snapped him up. It might have seemed like a bargain at the time, but after some serious injuries he never thrived in Catalunya and is currently on loan at Olympiakos.

15) BENNI MCCARTHY | Blackburn to West Ham United for £2.5m (2010) | A deadline-day signing gone wrong, McCarthy picked up an injury shortly after his move, then visibly gained weight during his stay at Upton Park. Paid over £1m (€1.2m) by West Ham to tear up his contract the following year.#

14) THOMAS GRAVESEN | Everton to Real Madrid for €4m (2005) | After initial popularity, Gravesen was quickly consigned to the bench at the Santiago Bernabeu. Shipped back out to Britain six months after his arrival in Spain.

13) SAMUEL KUFFOUR | Roma to Ajax on loan (2008) | Signed for six months with a view to a permanent deal for two further seasons, Kuffour was such a flop that he was released from the loan and sent back to Roma.
