The Spaniard is the latest Barcelona player to insist that his Argentine team-mate deserves the Ballon d’Or more than the Real Madrid attacker or Manuel Neuer
Lionel Messi is better than any other player in the world and deserves to Ballon d’Or over Cristiano Ronaldo, according to Barcelona team-mate Pedro.
The Argentine won the world’s best player accolade – now awarded by Fifa – for four straight years until Ronaldo ended his Ballon d’Or rule by taking home the trophy for the second time for his efforts in 2013 last January.
After helping to fire Carlo Ancelotti’s men to the Decima earlier this year with a Champions League triumph, as well as Copa del Rey success, Ronaldo is the bookmaker’s favourite in the lead up to January 12’s ceremony.
Messi’s best achievement was skippering Argentina to the World Cup final this summer, while Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer – who triumphed with Germany in the tournament – is the third footballer chasing the award.
Despite not being at the forefront in winning silverware in 2014, Pedro believes that nobody on the planet can hold a candle to Messi when it comes to on-the-pitch quality – not even his Real Madrid rival Ronaldo.
“Ronaldo has accumulated good statistics in the past year,” the Spain international told reporters after a charity match on Friday. “But Leo Messi is superior to everyone. He must win the Ballon d’Or”
Barcelona are into the last 16 of the Champions League and Copa del Rey, and are placed one point adrift of La Liga leaders Real Madrid (who have a game in hand) as of the current winter break.
“Barca are alive in all competitions,” Pedro mused. “We want to see what we can achieve in the next six months.”
