Buhari Will Not Prosecute Past Corrupt Leaders – Oyegun
If elected Nigeria’s president in 2015, the former military leader, Muhammadu Buhari, will not dig into the past, but will totally concentrate on the future, APC chairman, John Oyegun, declares.
Oyegun emphasised that Buhari would not immediately go after past politicians and officials, who reived the country and committed other crimes. He will be more focused on solving Nigeria’s many problems left behind by the former leaders.
Speaking with reporters on December 29, 2014, Monday, in Benin, Edo State, Oyegun said:
“The first moments of a Buhari Presidency, the outlook is on the future.”
“The message will be clear, whatever you engage in before that is detrimental to the people of this country, please stop it, change has come.”
Speaking about the forthcoming elections, Oyegun expressed his assurance in APC’s victory and following positive changes.
“We will go into post May 2015, where the law will normally take its course. It is not going to be looking back. Anybody who believes that the future of this country is greater than his personal proclivities will have nothing to fear. There will be a line drawn on the sand, on one part is the past and on the other side is the future.
“If you are part of the future, part of changing the society from the ills that have brought us to our kneels, you are our friend, you have nothing at all to fear. We don’t have time to go digging into the past. The future of our people is the challenge that we have, not the past.”
With a high level of corruption in Nigeria, Buhari’s supporters project him as a tough leader who will not tolerate fraud. They are sure that the former military leader will be brave to bring past and present corrupt officials to justice.
The APC chairman said it was untrue that the Buhari presidency will send Nigerians to jail, and accused the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of spreading that claim.
In his speech, Oyegun also stressed that Buhari would be willing to give officials who stole in the past a chance to mend their ways. But he will employ strict measures against those bent on continuing with corruption.
“The only people I think should fear the Buhari Presidency are those who do not want change. Those who want to continue with business as usual are those who want to continue to profit from the level of corruption in the society.
“We will have no apologies for people like that. But it is clear that from the Buhari perspective and that for the APC, the future of the people of this country is too important for us to spend valuable time trying to dig into the past.
“It is time for change and anybody who decides that he does not want to be part of change and want business as usual that is his choice.”
It would be noted that Buhari’s anti-corruption record as military leader is seen as his strongest mandate of his electoral campaign.
Before the APC primaries victory the candidate emotionally said:
“I am not a rich person, I can’t give you a pocketful of dollars or naira to purchase your support. I want a Nigeria … where corruption no longer trespasses into our institutions and national behavior.”
