Chuba Akpom scored a hat-trick as Arsenal progressed to the Barclays
Asia Trophy final with a 4-0 win over a Singapore Select XI.
The 19-year-old, who is yet to score a competitive goal for the
Gunners, put the tourists ahead on 30 minutes with a low finish from 12
yards before slotting home a penalty in the second half.
Jack
Wilshere had dispatched a penalty of his own in between Akpom's first
two goals, before the young striker headed into the top corner from six
yards to round off a fine performance.
Arsenal will now play
Everton in the final on Saturday after the Toffees saw off Stoke 5-4 on
penalties following a goalless draw earlier on Wednesday in the same
stadium. Singapore Select XI will play Stoke in the third-place play-off
on the same day.
Petr Cech was left waiting for his Arsenal debut
as Emiliano Martinez started in goal in an XI including Wilshere, Alex
Oxlade-Chamberlain and Per Mertesacker, while Wojciech Szczesny started
on the bench.
They had to be patient early on, but Arsenal could
have took the lead on 16 minutes but for a fine a double save from Izwan
Mahbud, first denying Alex Iwobi low down to his right before parrying
Oxlade-Chamberlain's ferocious effort from 15 yards.
Akpom put the
tourists ahead after half an hour, finishing a sweeping Arsenal move
from 12 yards after Oxlade-Chamberlain broke with pace.
After the
break, Iwobi missed two chances inside the area, first from
Oxlade-Chamberlain's dinked through ball on the half-volley, and then
from Wilshere's fine cut-back from the right. But the Gunners doubled
their lead on the hour.
After Mathieu Debuchy was brought down by
Sirina Camara on the right of the area, Wilshere stepped up to slam the
resulting penalty into the right corner of the net.
Arsenal
received another spot kick 14 minutes from time when substitute Jon
Toral was cynically brought down by goalkeeper Izwan, Akpom stepping up
to send the goalkeeper the wrong way for his second.
And the youngster grabbed his hat-trick late on, heading home Hector Bellerin's fine cross from six yards.
Akpom nearly grabbed a fourth goal in the last minute, but Izwan did well to parry clear his powerful effort from a slight angle
New Manchester City signing Raheem Sterling said he is delighted to
be joining a club he expects to be challenging for major honours every
season.
However, the 20-year-old winger also thanked former club Liverpool
for giving him the chance to develop his experience and skills in the
Premier League.
After moving to the Etihad Stadium in a record £49m deal " the highest fee for any English player " Sterling told the club's official website: "The world class players are here and a squad capable of winning things year in, year out.
"The
more quality players that are around you, the more quality it brings
out in you so I can't wait to get started and play alongside them."
But
looking back on his five years at Anfield, he added: "It has been a
long journey from QPR and I'd like to thank a few people who have helped
me along the way.
"I'd like to thank Rafa Benitez for taking me
to Liverpool as a 15 year old " that was a massive step for me and a new
challenge.
"Also to Kenny Dalglish for showing such faith in me and putting me in at such a young age.
"Finally,
I'd like to thank Brendan Rodgers for giving me a chance and an
opportunity in the first team, giving me my full debut " against City,
funnily enough " and giving me a real chance to cement a place in the
first team and show the world my talents."
As for finally putting
pen to paper at the end of transfer saga that created plenty of
animosity along the way, Sterling went on: "It's a good feeling and a
really happy time for me and my family.
"I'm just glad it's all over and done with and I can't wait to get on the training field."
And
what about being the most expensive English footballer in history: "You
don't think about things like that when you're that age but things have
come really fast in the last couple of years.
"I've just had to
learn to take it all in my stride but I never imagined I'd be at this
point at the age I am now and breaking a British transfer record fee."
Sterling joins City on a five-year contract.

we've got him and I'm sure he'll be a good player for us.
"And Morgan as well " it's great to see Bastian, him, Matteo and Memphis all come in and give the squad a boost."
England
skipper Rooney believes the arrivals herald "exciting times" for the
club and said the new players had settled well within the squad after
flying out to America.

Champions Cup in the United States, which will include fixtures against
Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, as part of their preparations for the
new season.
"It's exciting times and I'm sure over the next week
or two it'll be great for us to get some training sessions in and get to
know each other's games," Rooney said.
"We had the day we first
flew out when we first met Bastian and Morgan and they've settled in as
well as they can do in a couple of days. It's great to have them with
us."
